How Our Custom Cast Stone Mantels Are Made

Cast stone is one of the oldest tricks in classical architecture: a refined blend of crushed natural stone aggregates and cement, cast in a mold and finished by hand until it is indistinguishable from carved limestone.

Consultation and measurement

Every project begins with your room. We look at photos of the space, talk through the style you want — modern linear, arched, traditional carved — and take precise measurements of the fireplace and wall. If you are covering an existing brick fireplace, this is where we confirm exactly how the new over-mantel will fit over the old masonry, and whether the firebox opening height should be adjusted.

Design

We design the mantel around your dimensions and taste. Because the piece will be cast rather than cut from a slab, almost any profile is on the table: deep classical moldings, fluted legs, clean square-edged modern surrounds, arched openings, grid-relief panels. You can start from one of our existing designs and adapt it, or bring us something entirely your own — we are happy to bid on fully custom work.

03

Casting

In our workshop, the design becomes a mold, and the mold is filled with our cast stone mix — crushed natural stone aggregate bonded with cement, then backed with fiberglass reinforcement — strong, yet light enough to handle and install in a single day. Casting in sections keeps each piece manageable for delivery and installation while letting us build surrounds of nearly any size. The material cures into a dense, fire-resistant stone that does not crack with heat.

Hand finishing

This is where the craft shows. Each piece is hand-troweled and hand-finished — surfaces smoothed, details sharpened, texture worked in — so the final mantel reads as sculpted stone rather than a factory product. No two pieces leave the shop identical, because no two are finished by machine.

Delivery and installation

Our own team delivers and installs the finished mantel anywhere in Toronto and the GTA. Because the same company designed, cast and finished the piece, installation day holds no surprises — most of the work is already done in the workshop, and a typical installation takes about a day: the sections fit, the lines are plumb, and the fireplace that anchors your living room finally looks the part. The cast stone's zero-clearance safety means it sits confidently around masonry and prefabricated fireboxes alike.
